John Vincent Matthewson

In Memorial

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Superintendent John Vincent Matthewson on June 29, 2012. Dad was born on July 16, 1936 in Moline, Manitoba. He was the loving son of Robert and Lena Matthewson. John was a gifted athlete and never lost his love of sports throughout his life. Our father joined the RCMP in 1956 and served his community and country with dignity and honour until his retirement in 1993. He spent the first part of his career in the North where he met our beautiful mother, Sherrie Gaehring. John and Sherrie were married in 1960 and went on to raise three daughters Shawn, Sheirra and Kyla. (Peter Sellers) Our father was stationed all over Canada and finished his career as the Commanding Officer in Port Alberni, Maple Ridge and finally Coquitlam.

Dad was a devoted community volunteer and dedicated years of service to Youth Diversions, the Rotary, the Legion, the Upper Fraser Valley Seniors Golf Association and the Maple Ridge Arts Centre. Dad had many interests. He was also a wonderful artist and wood carver. Dad also really loved to golf and two weeks before his death got a hole in one at the Maple Ridge Golf Course.

Above all else, Dad was a devoted father and grandfather. He was very proud of his five grandchildren Aron and Liam Schober, Caelen and Brading Matthewson-Davies and Rorey Sellers. John is survived by his sister Jean Carberry and her husband Dale, his brother in law Dale Gaehring and his wife Carol as well as numerous nieces and nephews. John was pre-deceased by our mother who died last year, and by his beautiful grandson Aron and his son-in-law Siegfried.

A service will take place on Sunday, July 8 from 2 to 4 pm at the Maple Ridge Arts Centre Theatre at 11995 Haney Place in Maple Ridge. Donations in John’s memory can be made to the RCMP Scholarship Fund or the Maple Ridge Youth Centre Society.

Condolence Messages

  1. Dear Shawn, Shierra, Kyla(Pete). Liam, Caelen, Brading & Rorey

I share your grief and sorrow in the loss if your father and grandfather.

Your mom and dad were dear friends, and I will always cherish the memories of our friendship and good times we had together.

Your dad has left his earthly life, but his love and caring for you will shine from above. Memories will ease the pain, and keep him forever in your hearts.

John I am so glad you “Aced” it on the golf course. Guess you’ll be chasing that “little white Ball”, hoping for another hole in one on that Golf Course in the Sky.

I regret that I will not be able to be at the service, but will be with you all in my thoughts and prayers.

    God Bless and comfort you.
    With Sincerest Sympathy
    Doris Owen

My heart goes out to all of you.
You are suffering the loss of a gentle Father and Grandfather.

    God bless,

    Celine ( and son, Jason)

  4. Dennis Gaehring

Dear Shawn, Shierra, Kyla and Family,

Your Dad, Uncle John was a very kind generous man. I will always cherish the times we spent on family vacations when you were younger, Grandpa and Grandmas, Banff, the Shuswap (playing liars dice) to name a few. He treated me like a son, he actually taught me how to golf, I owe a lot to your dad.

I always looked forward to spending time with your mom and dad and of course my cousins.

Take care, my deepest thoughts are with you,
    Love Dennis

    Members of the Matthewson Family

Many years have passed since I have had contact with John, but memories of he and your family are with me today in sadness. John and I were stationed together in Vegreville where we enjoyed many good times with he and Sherrie. We were later to be in Ottawa together, but years, circumstances and distance have tended to diminish contact. We would like to extend our sympathy to the family at this time of mourning.

  6. Richard (dick) Kerr

I will miss my golf buddy of so many years. His kindness and thoughtfulnessfor all was a gift to me. Love you John. Will meet you later up there for our tee time. Dick Kerr.

  7. Sherry Thiessen

    To the Matthewson family,

I was saddened to hear about John. I worked as a Municipal Employess at Maple Ridge Detachment when he was the OIC there. I’ll always remember he attended the service for my dad when he passed away. John was a such good person. Unfortunately I was not able to attend John’s service, but please know you are in my thoughts.

  8. Sandy Pilgrim (Wilcox)

    Shawn, Shierra, Kyla and family.

I was very sad to hear of the passing of your father. Great memories of the Matthewson family (swimming pool & snowbanks) are synonymous with memories of Ottawa and growing up, and will always be. My thoughts are with all of you during this difficult time.

  10. Dear Shawn, Sheirra, Kyla and family,

We were so saddened by the passing of your Dad. We will miss him dearly as we have special memories of him and our families together. Your Mom and Dad will always have a special place in our hearts and we will remember them with fondness.

Love Laurel, Phil, Ben and Tara

  11. John was my Inspector at Port Alberni from 1984-1988 and he was very good to all of us in that office. He and his wife Sherrie were very outgoing persons to all us younger officers at the detachment. John had one thing that set him apart from all others. He used to smoke these little cigars and you could always tell where John had been in the detachment because he left his trail. Good memories of both him and his dear wife.
