In Memorial

November 5, 1933 – July 10, 2011

Robert (Bob) Bowyer passed away peacefully with family by his side at McKenney Creek Hospice in Maple Ridge, B.C. at the age of 77. Bob was born at Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster and raised in Port Hammond, B.C. Bob, was predeceased by his dear wife Loretta (Bubs), and they were long time residents of Maple Ridge, and formerly, of Port Coquitlam.

Bob will be lovingly remembered by his four children, Mike (June), Michelle (Melissa), Lou (Linda), Kaleen (Barb), his five grandchildren, Kevin (Diane), Steve, Laura, Aaron and Kelsey. Bob also leaves behind his sister, Claire Bowyer of Langley and brother Albert Bowyer of Calgary, Alberta. He will be greatly missed by the many family and friends who shared in his life, and in many good times and celebrations at the family home in Maple Ridge.

Bob was an accomplished athlete throughout much of his youthful years. Most notably, Bob was a gifted baseball player, playing in the Dewdney Men’s league for many years. He also played a mean game of golf and he smashed many a shuttlecock with authority in his day.

Bob’s work career at ESCO Limited in Port Coquitlam spanned 38 years where he was the plant superintendent for over 20 years. He was affectionately known as the “Man of Steel” by those he knew him in that capacity.

The Bowyer family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at McKenney Creek Hospice who gently and lovingly cared for dad in his final days.

Service and reception will be held at 11:00am on Friday, July 15th at Garden Hill Funeral Services, 11765 – 224th Street, Maple, Ridge. Burial to follow at Maple Ridge Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Alzheimer’s Society would be greatly appreciated.

Condolence from Jim Robson on July 14th, 2011 5:24 pm

I wish to offer sincere condolences to the Bowyer family for the passing of Bob Bowyer.
I had the pleasure of knowing “Ribsy” as a student of Maple Ridge High School. He was a Bowyer, so he was a good athlete. Name the sport..he was outstanding..and I will always remember his winning home run in the 12th inning the day Hammond defeated Haney 5-4 on opening day at Telosky Stadium in 1951.
He was a fun guy to be around and a great teammate, supportive of those younger and not as gifted as he was.
He will be fondly remembered by many.
Jim Robson.

Condolence from Don & Marlene Davis on July 16th, 2011 2:09 pm

We are so sad to hear of Ribsy’s passing. Don has commented many times over the past months that Ribsy was his first friend when he moved to Hammond in 1948. They played ball together in Hammond and then went on to play for Maillardville Athletics. When Ribsy hit the home run to beat Haney in 1951 Don said he would smoke a cigar if they won and Ted Bowyer said he would buy the cigar!! So Don did and because he is a non smoker he was very ill!! Don and Ribsy were good buddies for many years- they always seemed to pick up a conversation from the last time they had been together. A sign of sincere and good friendship.
The many times we visited the Bowyer home we were made to feel so welcome. We truly will miss Ribsy – as we miss Bubs- they were such an endearing couple. The end of an era, that enables us to look back, with many happy memories.
Thinking of your family with sincere sympathy. Don and Marlene
