Shirley Florence Zaitsoff (nee Robertson)

In Memorial

May 31, 1955 – Mar 14, 2013

Shirley passed away peacefully on March 14th, 2013, after a long
battle with Huntington’s Disease. She spent her final days surrounded
by family, listening to her children and siblings share their
favourite “mom”-ories.

Shirley was born in Victoria BC, the second of five siblings. She
grew up in Kamloops and Maple Ridge, graduating from Maple Ridge
Secondary School in 1973, and the University of British Columbia with
a BA in Psychology in 1979. Shirley held a special place in heart for
her pets, who are now welcoming her with wagging tails. Shirley also
loved her work helping those with disabilities, bowling, slo-pitch,
and spending summers camping and relaxing in Shuswap Lake.

Shirley is survived by her son James (Heather), daughter Sara (Adam),
siblings Norma (Edward), Neil (Marguerite), Karen (Rob), and Lori
(Michael), and her grand-pets.

The family would like to thank the staff at Evergreen Hamlets and the
ICU of Surrey Memorial Hospital for their kindness and excellent care.

Please join us for a celebration of Shirley’s life on Saturday, March
23, at 11:00 a.m at Garden Hill Funeral Home, 11765 224th Street,
Maple Ridge. Wear blue (Shirley’s favourite colour) and bring your
Shirley stories and bowling shoes (5-pin bowling to follow at 2:30
p.m. – Shirley’s sport of choice).

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Huntington’s Society of Canada
would be appreciated.

Condolence Messages

  1. Rayma Anderson Andres :

James and family: My sincere sympathy in the loss of your Mom. I know you must have many memories of your Mom that you will cherish for the rest of your life. She always welcomed Chris into your home when you were school friends and made sure that I felt comfortable leaving him when I was a nervous new diabetic-child parent. Hold onto your memories and may time heal your hearts.

  6. I am so sorry that your Mom has left this life. I SUSPECT that the past few months were very hard for all.She is at peace now. I think of Shirley in the early years and charished our friendship . The laughs , the worries, the breakups and victories. The lists she made , attention to detail.I hope the family stays strong , loves , laughs and has a cold one for her.

  7. James – Thank you for the phone call. That is never an easy task. You sounded so responsible, mature and strong. Your Mom did a great job raising you! She was always so proud of you and Sara. She loved you guys so much.

I have been thinking a lot about Shirley and remembering so much of our High School and UBC years together. As sad as I feel about her passing, I find myself smiling at the things we did and good times we had. She was a great friend and a positive influence on me. I was very lucky to have had her as my friend. She won’t be forgotten.

  8. Suzanne and Kevin Kellerman :

James and Sara , Shirley will always hold a special place in our hearts. We shared many special times together watching you grow up. The two of you are her pride and joy and she is in a wonderful place now. We truly are better people for having had her touch our lives and hearts. Love you both Suzanne, Kevin, Morgan and Drew Kellerman.

  9. While I am sure there were times that Shirley would have liked to shoot me in our younger days, there were also some great times between our families. The best memories were especially out at the Shuswap with all the kids.

It is very sad to see friends passing. James and Sara, you should be very proud of your mom. She was one of the kindest people I have ever known. I wish I could be there today.

We will definitely have a cold one for her up at the lake this year.

  10. Bonnie Chappell :

To James, Sara, Norma, Ed, Neil, Marguerite, Lori, Michael, Karen and Rob,
I was so sorry to hear of Shirley’s passing. I remember the fun times we had at Shuswap Lake and in Haney when mom (Shirley’s Auntie Jean), my dad, brother and I visited. I’ll be thinking of you all today…
